Centrica

Centrica s.r.l. is a company born in Florence in 1999 from the experience of 3 engineers – Marco Cappellini, Paolo De Rocco and Paolo Romoli – and engaged in the digitization of works and places of art. It has developed ArtCentrica, an EdTech platform that allows you to catalogue, view and compare high-resolution works, carry out online visits and thematic itineraries and innovate the traditional approach to art education in an interactive and shared way. Indeed, Centrica’s goal is to provide concrete and cutting-edge solutions to the growing demand for innovative tools to support the digitization of museums and distance learning, induced by the pandemic: a market – the EdTech one – in growing expansion, which globally, it expects an increase of about $158 billion between 2018 and 2025.

Centrica is now supported by Fondazione Social Venture Giordano Dell’Amore (or “FSVGDA”), which has invested in the S.r.l. €200,000 in equity. The investment was made as part of “Impact4Art”, a 1MLN/€ “impact” program to support the recovery of the Art and Culture sector, launched at the beginning of 2021 by FSVGDA in synergy with Fondazione Cariplo.

Impact

Centrica considers art history as an essential tool for the educational, expressive and creative development of the new generations of students: its activity, in fact, falls within the framework of SDG n.4 (quality education). With this in mind, the company primarily intends to support teachers and educators in distance learning, innovating the traditional approach to teaching art in schools, through the use of digital tools. It is no coincidence that Centrica has further developed its business model in the midst of the pandemic, with the aim of proposing possible alternatives to museum closures and an action to counter the growing decline in cultural participation of the Italian population. The I.R.P.E.T. data have shown that, in Tuscany alone, in 2021 there were around 3.8 million fewer admissions to museums and a total loss of 63 million euros in public expenditure (equal to 72% of the pre-pandemic total). In this context, on the one hand, there is a difficulty of direct access to places of culture by many students and, on the other, a scarce use of technology by museums and cultural institutes for commercial and educational purposes. Furthermore, by recognizing a fixed percentage of revenues to museums, Centrica supports them by expanding their revenue streams: every year 30% of revenues from ArtCentrica is allocated to museums registered on the platform.
